Kadenze is an online platform looking to provide free music technology courses for free.

At its core, Kadenze “provides a rich community experience full of discussion and collaboration, where students from all over the world can inspire one another to learn and grow together”. The capabilities of the platform allow students to:

– Watch lectures by way of videos, animations, demonstrations, and interviews
– Learn at your own pace, through optimized mobile platforms.
– Showcase your work through professional portfolio building
– Discuss lessons and coursework through community forums.

As you can see, Kadenze essentially serves as a two-fold platform. Initially, it builds a new digital platform that makes computer and tablet based learning more accessible. Secondly, it builds content while collecting prominent industry professionals as instructors (Stanford’s Dr. Perry Cook serves as co-founder, and artists such as Monolake have provided tutorials).

Course enrolment is FREE, however should you wish for assignments and evaluations, a $7 per month premium subscription is needed. Should you choose to spend more, courses from a variety of partner institutions are also available (Stanford, Princeton, and Goldsmiths act as some education partners, while Ableton, Native Instruments, and Adobe are amongst its industrial partners).

Current courses include Sound Production in Ableton Live for Musicians and Artists and Introduction to Programming for Musicians and Digital Artists, with upcoming courses covering everything from Introducing Entrepreneurship for Musicians to Online Jamming and Concert Technology. Kadenze also offers select courses for actual university credit. Upon completion, these courses will provide credits recognized by the institutions that offer them, albeit under certain terms.
