Over the past few weeks there has been a buzz going around the dance music industry regarding the launch of a new label out of the Netherlands called Subjekt Recordings. After their first mix by disCerN, the fresh label is about to release their first single, made by Peruvian wonderboy Luis Leon, and Eric Volta contributing a remix to the title track. In the near future, artists like Stefan Z, Discern, Atapy and Tim Paris will take part in releasing music form the Amsterdam based label.
With an impressive pack of quality releases like “Love Is A Lie” on Double Tree Records and other records on labels such as Union Jack or Cimelde, Luis Leon has been on a steady roll in the last year. His past edit for Deep House Amsterdam of Maverick Sabre – I Need hit an astonishing one million plays. Rest assured that Luis Leon’s release on Subjekt will certainly impress.
The 2-track EP entitled “Borrowed Places” self-possesses Luis Leon along with vocals by Kimono whereas the remix duties are shared with No.19’s and the Social Experiment‘s Eric Volta.
The title track “Borrowed Places” interprets a celestial emotion as Kimono’s voice is slowly swaying away any complications. It almost feels as the track was developed based on the vocal itself and not the other way around. The punchy simplicity is shocking. The percussion work along with a wavered bass cord slowly crawls under your skin as the track loosens in the flawlessly chosen lyrics exuding a warm home felt sensation.
Eric Volta’s remix rearranges things around and takes the track intro a different sphere of electronic music with its 2/4 rhythms. Slender wobbling bass sound supplements Eric Volta’s love for wriggling synth work into a galactic yet cordial place of sound. Sensibly picked delay times and permutations of the vocal along with a layered echo refrain convert the track in a slow grinding ascension to its climax as remains of the vocal find their way hovering among the synth follow-ups.
This EP stunned us to the extent that it’s been playing non-stop for the past few weeks and we’re sure it will leave a certain mark on the year 2014 for Luis Leon.
