The database style website, DontSample.Me has been created to aid musicians in avoiding pesky copyright infringement notices by providing a list of artists they should not sample.
The list contains near 3000 names of artists who do not allow sampling, or remixing at the risk of a DMCA takedown notice, or even stricter legal action. DontSample.Me is the most cohesive list of major label musicians known to take action against others “using” their work. As (for example) SoundCloud increases their affiliations with the major labels, DMCA takedown requests of unauthorized bootlegs, remixes and mixtapes has become a consistent reality.
So far, the site, which was created as a personal project by Morgan Crozier, aims to “empower a new generation of creativity and independent artists that isn’t constantly feeding the pockets of people who don’t care about you“.
A quick look through the site see’s many artists that one may already think of as particularly strict on the use of their material, such as The Beatles, 50 Cent, Frank Sinatra, and Drake, however there is quite a healthy dose of electronic music representatives (mostly within the EDM side of things) also, such as Calvin Harris, Afrojack, Deadmau5, Alesso, Chemical Brothers, Duke Dumont, Duck Sauce, Eric Prydz, Faithless, Fatboy Slim, Gesaffelstein, Hardwell, Kaskade, Madeon, and more.
